Te Reo Term 4

This term we have been learning all about the Marae. We have learned that…

  • The Marae is an important focal point for the community.
  • The Marea is a place where tradition and customs can be carried out.
  • The Marae is a place where people can express their values with dignity.
  • There are many kawa ( protocols) that prevail on the marae.
  • Marae kawa (protocols) can differ between maraes and iwi.

We have focused on some key concepts when doing this learning.
These are listed and explained in the table below.

Concept
Definition -
give the meaning of these concepts in your own words.
Tikanga
How we do things.
Pōwhiri
Welcoming ceremony e.g welcoming visitors.
Tangata whenua
People who belong in the marae.
Manuhiri
Visitors to the marae.
TÅ«rangawaewae
People who live in the marae.
Whanaungatanga
The connection between you and the marae.
Manaakitanga
Care about someone.
Aroha
The respect and love for someone at the marae.

See this video for an explanation of the roles and responsibilities of people on a marae.

Something I would like to learn more about the marae is how long does a marae go on for?

Parliament

This term we have been learning about Parliament. We have looked at the difference between government and parliament, NZ parliament, who is in government, how our government works and we compared democracy to dictatorship.

Three things that I learned are NZ parliament are:

  • We have equal rights
  • That their are multiple party in parliament
  • You need over 50% of the votes to govern

Here is the link to my compare and contrast map explaining the difference between democracy and dictatorship.

I can take action to improve the water cycle in Canterbury

In this project I was working with Me, myself and I and we decided to create a water filter.
Here is a link what we made.

In this project we decided that our success criteria were: (list the criteria you created on slide 7)
Screen Shot 2014-10-09 at 11.04.50 am.png
I can identify my success criteria

Success Criteria ( A good TV ad, water filter or Children’s Story needs...

A good TV ad, water filter or Children’s Story needs...
Why is this important?
To filter healthy clean water.
Because we need to drink clear and healthy water otherwise we will get sick.
To be strong and durable.
Because if it isn’t strong enough it will break and it won’t filter any water.
To be light and you can carry it around.
So it’s easier to carry around and have drinkable water.
To have the materials.
Because if don't have the materials the water filter won't work.
To have good materials that won't expire
So you can use the water filter for a long period of time.

Overall our project do not meet this criteria because we haven't tested our water filter yet.

Music

I can describe the characteristics of music in songs from the past and present and from different genres.

Over the past 9 weeks I have been learning to describe the characteristics of music from songs of various times and genres.

I can name and define these characteristics of music

1. Form
2.Melody
3. Harmony
4.Timbre
5. Rhythm

What did you find most interesting during this topic.

I found good songs need all the characteristics interesting because Every characteristic has something a good song needs like notes put together to make the song unique.

CARE progress

CARE: My progress so far

The CARE award that I am working towards is: Bronze

The one area of CARE that I am doing best in is: Community   because: I have lots of ticks there.

The one area of CARE that I need to work harder in is: Active thinking            because: I need

To show my leadership qualities I am a role model to others in the CARE values by doing/showing these leadership traits: Integrity, Resilience, Trustworthy.

On the CARE SOLO matrix below I am at this SOLO level: Relational            because:I can do the CARE values everyday by myself, but i'm not good enough to teach others.

Water cycle writing

The water cycle is a process that water goes through between land, sea and the atmosphere, so you could say the water is basically recycled. The steps of the water cycle, eg: Evaporation,Condensation,Precipitation, and runoff/groundwater.

Evaporation
Evaporation is the first step of cycle is a long process, also it is when the sun heats up the sea/ocean and the water turns invisible and glides up to the atmosphere(Air). In this process we then move into the next part of the water cycle which is condensation. Condensation is better when the sun is hotter because it heats up more water at once. The next part of the water cycle which is condensation.

Condensation
Condensation is when the water from evaporation forms a cloud and all the water builds up and becomes a could. When this process happens we call it rain but the science terms is precipitation. Which brings me to my next step in the water cycle precipitation.

Precipitation
Precipitation is when the water vapor gets build up into a cloud and, when it  is heavy enough to make the liquid and a solid come out of the cloud, and then it rains and falls into a river, a liquid is rain and a solid can be snow/ice or hail. The last and one of the most important steps is run off.

Runoff
Run-off is a process when the water comes down from a river into a ocean to redo the whole process; and after it rains the rainwater will rain water will run down a lake or a river back into the ocean. When the water is coming down it can bring in lots of random things like dirt, gravel and maybe some sand.

Overall the water cycle is a very important cycle it keeps everything alive and a cycle needs steps so the water cycle wouldn’t be possible without Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation, and runoff.

I can recognize and understand a variety of grammatical constructions and some rhetorical patterns

In this unit I have been learning about:
  • The parts of speech.
  • The types of nouns.
  • The types of sentences.

In this unit, I found challenging finding the difference between all the nouns.

Something new I learnt was all the different nouns.

My CARE Progress

I have done a check of my CARE progress so far this year.

I am proud of my progress I feel I could do much better.
Because i need to record my ticks when I need too.

How far away are you from reaching your BRONZE
A long way because I usually don't record my ticks.

The area of CARE that I need to try harder in C / A / R / E
Active thinking because i need to come up with more ideas.

To achieve my BRONZE award quicker I need to show all the care values more.

The one thing that I can do to improve my progress in CARE is to show the care values more.

We will review CARE progress again at the end of the term.

I can ask and answer a range of questions about celebrations, using Te Reo Maori. I can teach others these questions and answers.

In Te Reo this term I have been learning about using vocabulary around food (Kai) and celebrations (Ngā hākari)

Here are some sentences, with english translation in brackets, that I can say confidently (list 3-4).
  1. He pai ki a koe te/ngā (Do you like…)
  2. Kāore e pai ki ahau te/ nga___ .( I don’t like______)
  3. He aha te mea pai, ki a koe kei to pāti? (What do you like about your party?)
  4. He rā whānau ki a koe (A happy birthday to you)

WALT apply the techniques of improvisation to a range of different scenarios.

Improvisation TECHNIQUES that I have used successfully are always say yes because it keeps the improvisation going.

Improvisation TECHNIQUES that I would like to have more practice at is thinking on the spot and keep the improv going.

The thing that I enjoyed most about this unit of learning was the game because its fun watching people act.

The thing that I found most challenging during this unit of learning was acting in front of a group because people are watching and it pressures you when acting.

My favorite improvisation game was doorbell because it was challenging and it was fun

My next step/ something I need to work on further  in improvisation is thing of ideas on the spot because i cant think of something on the spot, i need to think before i get up on stage.

Student Led Conference Reflection

The things I enjoyed most about my SLC were: talking to my parents about my learning.

What went well and why my presenting because i was confident and nothing went wrong with the device.

What were the challenges you faced when preparing and presenting your SLC I was nerves while talking to my parents

What changes would you make for next time and why add more detail so i take up all the time i had an extra 5 minutes at the end.

Using a range of multiplicative strategies

In Maths we have been learning to use a range of multiplicative strategies when operating with whole numbers.

Here is a link to our online modelling book

The strategies we have been learning are:

- Estimate the reasonableness of large problems like 1 788 – 891. Could 497 be right?
- Use multiplication to solve addition and subtraction problems eg.
   64 – 48 = as (8 x 8) – (6 x 8) = 2 x 8= 16
- Use doubling / halving, trebling/ thirding and adjusting to solve multiplication problems,
  eg.  12 x 50 solved as 4 x 150= 600
- Use an algorithm to solve multiplication problems.
- Solve problems using simple cube numbers .
- Use an algorithm to solve division problems.

Here is a link to my Multiplicative Strategies Assessment which shows that I know why and how I use particular strategies. This doc also has screenshots to show which IXL activities I have completed as part of my learning.

My next step in my Maths Learning is Measurement.

Definitions
Void: an empty space or vacuum.

Fluorescent: able to give off visible light after being exposed to a source of heat, light, or other form of energy

Vulnerable: able to be hurt or injured

Interconnected: to connect or cause to be connected one to the other or others.

Seldom: not often; rarely.

Screen Shot 2014-10-09 at 11.04.46 am.png
Example/Non Example
Is a void messy? Why or why not?
yes because you don't know what's gonna be in the void.
Which color is the most fluorescent at night? Why?
red because it is a bright colour.
Why are elderly people more vulnerable than children? Why?
because they can't run or defend themselves from others.
Which is more interconnected; a vine or a dandelion? Why?
Vine because it is grass connected together.
Which is more seldom; the Olympics or an election in NZ? Why?
Olympics because it's every 4 years and a NZ election is 3 years.

Word Associations
The plants in the garden are die during a frost
vulnerable
There were lots of different paths that joined each other
interconnected
I made a shot from halfway while facing backwards.
seldom
We are still exploring  outer space.
void
I can find my key ring easily in the dark.
fluorescent

Word Relationships

How might each pair of words be connected?
Vulnerable/Fluorescent
you can be vulnerable when in light because everyone else can see as well.
Void/interconnected
void is connected with random things.

Extended Writing
Think of a time when you felt as though you were in a void or when you saw something that happens seldom. Write a paragraph about this.
On Saturday before my team's game we watched another game because we got there early, then we saw a guy no looked and kick the ball and the ball hit the crosshairs without looking and that happens seldom.
